Dr. Martens, who had the Clinic for Internal Diseases and Dietetics built, was far ahead of his time. He commissioned Henry van de Velde to construct this building in Deinze, in a highly functional modernist style.
The single-story building has an L-shaped plan and is constructed entirely of ochre-colored Dutch bricks, under a flat roof lined with ceramic tiles.
The main façade features a circular extension pierced by large metal windows; this is where the doctor received his patients.
The original inscription in black metal letters, « Inwendige Ziekten » (Internal Diseases) has been preserved.
The fully glazed entrance door is located under a washed concrete canopy.
To the side, the staggered rafter walls of the bicycle shed have been preserved, under a small concrete canopy. The building is in very good condition, although the masonry is now black and charred. It has not undergone any destroying renovations.
The building has been a listed since 1994.
Just opposite, on Emiel Clauslaan, is Villa Landing, the doctor's private residence. It was also designed by Henry van de Velde between 1933 and 1934.
The façade, almost intact, presents a beautiful horizontal construction, with the rounded corners so dear to Van de Velde.
The building has unfortunately been renovated several times and now houses a restaurant (see some photos after those of the outpatient clinic).
