In the great wave of garden city creations of the 1920s, Cité Jardin Kapelleveld was designed by town planner Louis Van der Swaelmen (Cité Jardin Floréal in Watermael Boitsfort) and avant-garde architects Huib Hoste and Antoine Pompe.
No less than 400 houses were built in this Brussels periphery, mainly intended for the (intellectual) middle class. Each individual house had a small garden and sometimes a garage.
Shops, a community hall and a sports field completed the project.
The style is resolutely Modernist, cubist, ahead of its time. These houses have more or less survived the time, some deserve a good restoration.
The ensemble is nevertheless a formidable witness to its time.
