A large modernist building, built in 1931-33 based on plans by the Brussels architect Josse Van Kriekinge and his son Maurice.
It is located on the site of the former fortification “Noord citadel”.
Built in length, accentuated by the strip windows, in yellow bricks, hard stone and painted concrete.
The rounded left part is designed like a ship’s prow with its terrace and its “tower”.
The central part consists of the main entrance, under a large concrete canopy, flanked by two square towers with windows.
A beautiful coat of arms in sculpted stone adorns the pediment.
The right part of the building has a series of windows framed in hard stone and ends with a high square tower with a clock.
The whole has been protected since 1995 and recognized as architectural heritage since 2019.
The academy is still in operation, it is a college that trains for merchant navy careers.
