As part of the city's expansion to the south, on the grounds of the 1913 World's Fair, a new district was created, large plots of land were divided up, with the obligation to build exceptional villas and houses, without an imposed style.

This is why the so-called "Millionaires" district presents a real architectural catalogue of the interwar period.

The De Bondt villa is a striking example, built by Jan Albert De Bondt for himself in 1930 in an avant-garde, modernist style, inspired by the Amsterdam School. The architect interweaves cubic volumes, horizontalities accentuated by Dubock bricks, flat roofs, and the verticality of the corner tower.

The house has suffered quite a bit of deterioration, but since the 90s, has been restored with the greatest care by the current owners. Only the rear part retains the after-effects of unsightly transformations.

The interior, the splendid hall with black and yellow tiles, the lounges with fixed furniture have been remarkably restored in the style. Some works of art that had disappeared have returned to their place.

It is currently an art gallery, and the house can be visited by appointment, info@villadebondt.be.

Building classified as a historical monument in 2005.
