  • Dhuicque Eugene

A large Art Deco apartment and warehouse building designed in 1937 by architect Eugène Dhuicque for the firm Gérard Koninckx Frères (G.K.F.), a wholesaler of exotic fruits, bananas, and oranges.

The Koninckx family would later build other warehouses and buildings in the same neighborhood.

The one on the corner of Dansaert and Marché aux Grains is relatively classic in design, with a canted facade on the corner.

The ground floor is very understated, with its hard stone facade featuring geometric patterns and stylized ironwork, some of which feature the fruits of the attic.

What characterizes this building is the magnificent frieze that adorns the attic and dormers. It is composed of polychrome ceramics depicting banana and orange trees, based on cartoons by Belgian artist Armand Paulis and created by French ceramist Maurice Dhomme.

Remarkably preserved, thanks to the strength and longevity of the ceramics, it still amazes passersby who look up!

The whole complex has been listed since March 1998.
