During the interwar period, in order to improve public hygiene and health, municipalities and cities built public baths, with showers and swimming pools.

In 1929, the city of Antwerp decided to build this large complex.

It called on engineers Alvoet and Roelandts, specialists in public heating and lighting, and Emiel Van Averbeke for the plans.

The period installations were used until the early 2000s.

For this monumental building in pure Art Deco-Modernist style, the architect created a sober, balanced design, without superfluous elements. Brown bricks and hard stone, washed concrete for the lintels. It is a building with a quite military look.

Two monumental entrances on each street, one leading directly to the shower rooms, the other to the swimming pool.

The entire complex has been technically renovated (pool, boiler rooms, ventilation, etc.) and the common areas restored in accordance with the original designs.

The interior spaces have retained the tiles (walls and floors), as well as the magnificent stained glass windows, the turquoise joinery and the long rows of cabins.

The building has been listed since 1998.
