Entrance buildings of the pedestrian and cycle tunnel under the Schelde.
Built from 1931 to 1933, at the same time as the underpass, a tunnel that replaced the boat crossings from one bank to the other.
The architect Emiel Van Averbeke was responsible for the design, entirely in Art Deco style.
The exterior building is typical of the industrial architecture of that period, a beautiful symmetrical structure in yellow brick and blue stone. Tall windows illuminate the side stairwells.
Inside, the period wooden escalators are spectacular and very regularly maintained. The tunnel is still used by many pedestrians and cyclists, but also by curious tourists.
The monument has been listed since 1997.
